A Friendly Thanksgiving

On Sunday my friend Mark hosted a thanksgiving dinner for a group of our friends. It was so amazing and I was so thankful because just a year ago I didn't know any of them and now some are my closest friends!

Before going though I had to decide what to bring. I brought spinanch and artichoke dip in a bread bowl, but more importantly homemade pumpkin pie compliments of LGrant! She shared a recipe with me and I made my first homemade pie.
It started out a little rocky because I had barely no salt and my only measuring spoon has the measurments warn off!

Then when stirring I realized part of the salt shaker fell into the pie (bad photo because I don't have a viewfinder still!)

BUT in the end it looked good and I think I baked it long enough!

I headed over to Mark's around 3 and we all helped with the baking!
Liz was in charge of basting!

The fabulous host and yummy Butterscotch martinis

The nice table setup for all

There was way too much food and it all tasted soo good! So many different and new recipes than I'm used to having at Thanksgiving!

After dinner we played a new game, Partini, and I highly recommend it!! It's like Cranium but with an adult twist and it was hilarious!

Finally it was time for dessert! The pumpkin pie was a success, thanks LGrant!

This dessert was called sex in a bowl and it was delicious!!

Lastly I brought these funny popper things and advent calendars for everyone!

Next thing we knew it was 11pm and time for us all to fall into a food coma!
I'm just thankful for good friends :)

2) Looks like fun. What's in a butterscotch martini. Sounds dangerously delicious. We have those poppers (we call 'em crackers) every year at Christmas.

4) I'll bet I know what Sex in a Bowl is. I've heard all kinds of names for it. Layers of brownies, whipped cream, chocolate pudding, toffee bits. It definitely gets lots of attention and rave reviews when people sample it.

Amber, A+ on the pie. Beautiful AND tasty too, from what you said. Can't beat that! Considering your rocky start and determination keeping you going, I'll say you are a baker at heart and will have more desserts in your future! Well done!!!

Looks like a great get-together with some fun folks and good food! Lots to be thankful for!!

6) Times like that are what makes you aware of how important our friends are. Your pie looks just right. Your kitchen sounds like mine. My mother said she didn't know how I cooked for a famliy with such an ill equipped kitchen. Maybe Santa will be good to you.

7) I am so impressed with your pie. Mine always look sunken! It must be the magic of that fabulous baker LGrant, all her recipes seem to turn to magic. It truly does look like you had a blast! I don't know about butterscotch, but I've always wanted to try a chocolate martini. There is nothing better than an evening spent with great friends. It looks like you have a great group of them. Happy Thanksgiving...a little early!

8) All I did was point her in the right direction. It's Amber's talent in the kitchen that makes that pie so awesome looking (and obviously tasting). I have had nothing but great success with that recipe on the Libby's label. I won't say Libby's pumpkin is always the perfect pumpkin but that recipe is tried and true. Amber--you may have a new career as a pie baker!!

9) I have to share a little snippet from an email today re: pies. Thought Amber and Leslie might enjoy the humor. :)

Grannie made such beautiful pies! One day I asked her, "how do you
get such beautiful pies with the crimps around the edge so even?"
"It's a family secret", she said. "So promise not to tell." I roll out the dough, then cut a bottom layer and carefully put it in the pie plate.
Then I slowly pour the filling, making sure it's not too full. Next I cut a top layer and put it over the filling. Finally, I take out my teeth and just run them around the edge of the pie crust and they make the nicest even impressions you ever did see.

12) No shame in the box, Amber. But, maybe get a copy of The Cake Doctor and learn to spruce them up a bit. I'm going to post my sister's (and Grant's favorite cake) over on my site for someone who requested it earlier. Might try that one for starters--it's a really good chocolate cake that doesn't taste "boxy".

I'm going to make a couple of pumpkin pies this weekend. I'm not too proud to use a packaged pie crust. Not my favorite part of the process and I like one that is whole-wheat and it's not worth getting the flour for one or two pie crusts. :)
