Workouts

So I have started working out again. I was doing real well this summer. I was going 3 to 4 days a week, then school started and football, and band. Needless to say I had not been since August. I kind of got tired of the treadmill and ellipitcal machine, so I have been going to kickboxing class, and an aerobics class. That kickboxing class is kicking my butt. This is my second week, but I am still so sore I can't move. I know that most people start this after Christmas, but I am trying to get ahead of the game. I really need to get 20Ibs off. I wonder if you loose weight if you exercise, but don't diet. I have a terrible time with that part. Food is my hobby. Not so much the cooking part, but the eating part.
My 12 year old has been going with me. He likes to do the weight machines and the treadmill. Does anyone know if 12 is too young to be lifting weights? He is about 5" and weighs about 140 Ibs. Right now he is just lifting the bar, which is 45Ibs I think. He does more with the machines than anything, and plays basketball.
I am taking a night off tonight. We have dinner at church and then a bible study, and then choir practice. Back to the grind tomorrow night.

1) First of all, good for you! Secondly, I've read that lifting weights to build muscles--leaning toward bodybuilding here--is not good for kids under the age of 18 years old, but just lifting weights to strengthen muscle shouldn't be an issue.

Food is my hobby, too, but to more of an extent than most. *sigh* And yes, you can lose weight without dieting, which you shouldn't do anyway; just eat the right foods in smaller portions up to six time per day for blood sugar maintenance, and you should do fine. Now, if you notice that you're putting on weight over the next couple weeks vs. losing, I'd cut down on portion size a bit, then reevaluate. But don't diet. Those don't work.

2) As you tone up you may weigh more-muscles are heavier but go by how your clothes fit and don' be obseesd with the scales.

3) Your son shouldnt have a problem lifting at that age as long as he doesnt go heavy.

Sorry to have to say this but the way you look has 60% to do with what you eat and only 40% how much you work out. The good news is that by gaining more muscle you increase your metabolism so you should burn more calories when you sleep with the extra muscle.

Like others have said you dont have to go overboard with cutting your food intake. Just pass up a snack, a cookie, or a piece of cake here and there and you will start to trim down. I personally have found that by cutting back on pasta's helps quite a bit.

I also like to drink the low sodium V-8 out of a can. I get mine at Sam's Club. Good Luck!

5) I agree with Dannie about going by the way your clothing fits, and not the numbers on the scale...that can get discouraging, especially if you're not losing as fast as you think you should be. I also agree with Rick as far as having to diet and exercise. Before I got pregnant I had great success with thedailyplate.com You can input your weightloss goal (1 lb/week, 2/week) and it will let you know, based on your activity level, how many calories you can consume each day. You can record your foods right there and it will add up your calorie totals for you. And lots of studies have shown that people lose more weight (and keep it off) when they write down everything they eat.

I didn't give anything up...still ate a cookie here and there, still had my daily chocolate fix...but I would eat one small piece of good chocolate rather than a huge candy bar. It really made me more aware of everything I put into my mouth and I ended up losing close to 17 lbs. I will def. be using that site again after the baby is born!

Good luck!

7) Hi Randale, I have some extra weight from living a happy life. At least that is what I am guessing happened :) My sister and I started training together 3 weeks ago for a race. I think having somebody to count on and hold you accountable is key. I eat really well already so that really isn't my issue. Matt and I stay away from a lot of processed foods and fried things. Of course you have to allow yourself to bend the rules on occasion. I don't own a scale but I do own pants. Pants seem to reveal everything I need to know about my progress. Right now I think I'm just converting fat to muscle. I feel very strong and that works for me. Make a goal for yourself like a race. I think a reward of accomplishing something besides weight loss can really keep you motivated. GOod luck and let's stay in touch on the progress :)
