Any sci-fi fans out there?

A few nights ago, I watched the latest trailer for the upcoming Star Trek film. This film is slated for a May 2009 release. For the most part when I hear that another incarnation of Star Trek is being released, I generally yawn and suggest that I'll catch it on video down the road if I remember. That changed after I watched this trailer.

The newest film shifts it focus back to the original cast from the 1960s television show. No, William Shatner is not walking around heavier and with a hairpiece. This film is a prequel that travels to the era just before the original series. Interesting concept.

This film is directed by J.J. Abrams. If you aren't familiar with his work, he's behind Lost, Alias, and Cloverfield.

Interested? Take a look.

1) That looks really good. I haven't been to a theater since I saw The Simpsons, so I'm due to go see a big screen.

2) Now THAT looks like fun - and like the first interesting thing they've ever done with Star Trek, including the original series!

3) JDI and I watched the new trailer last night. It kinda looks like a bunch of teenagers in space. I am skeptical because I have been a long time Star Trek fan, so I will be interested in how it turns out. I may not see it in the theatres at first, though.

4) Might give this one a try. I really didn't like the animated one. My grandson Davis will love it.

5) I've been a fan for a long time too but I liked it more for the relationships between the characters than the hi-tech special effects. I never even saw the last one. I was never a fan of The Next Generation--not a Picard fan. I know, I'm in the minority. It looks like it has potential and obviously that type of movie is best in the theater with the big screen. It used to be so much fun to go the first night to the first show with all the other fans to appreciate the crowd and everyone else getting all the fine points of the story that will go over the head of others not to mention it tended to be a more adult group who respected the characters and movie so you could enjoy it without a lot of noise and kids running all over. I'm leery but I might have to check it out--probably not the first show but I guess I can't resist seeing if they do something right with it or ruin it for me again. :) Thanks for the tip!!

6) Pastafarian and I saw the trailer last weekend because it'll probably be the first movie we'll see together in the theater since "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and "The Red Corner." He and I are vastly different in our taste where movies are concerned, though we do agree on a couple things--one being the special effects were the only good thing about "Titanic," and everything else pretty much sucked. Oh, and I'll have to gear myself up for the love scene in the new Trek film...I'm not a fan of love scenes, especially where they're not necessary.

And whereas I like Star Trek, it's probably not to the extent of K8Day, but it definitely extends farther than LGrant to "Next Generation" --anything after that, no. And actually, I think I liked Piquard more than Kirk! It's also the one place I liked a character played by Whoopi Goldberg. :O)

7) I like the sci-fi classics, I'm not very good at keeping up with new stuff as it comes out. Recently I've been volunteering on galaxyzoo.org helping them classify galaxys taken with the Hubbl Telescope. They've had lots of luck with the 150,000 volunteers so now they're about to launch Galaxy Zoo 2- with more way of classifying and distinguishing galaxys. If you have an interest in the "final frontier", I really recommend the real thing through Galaxy Zoo ;-) Maybe I'll make a whole blog about it this weekend...

8) For me, "Star Wars" blows "Star Trek" out of the water. Should've used a space analogy, huh? Still, I cannot wait for this one.

9) My youngest child's middle name is Seven (Seven of Nine). She also happens to be our seventh child.

Last time I went to the theater to see a Star Trek movie I came close to being thrown out. I was very pregnant, very hormonal, and chucked an entire bucket of popcorn at the screen. I think I'm gonna have to wait for the DVD.

10) I enjoy Star Trek, and several spin offs. I really liked the trailer. I think it will be fun to watch regardless of your affinity for (or not for) ST.

11) Crystal, do you remember the episode of Seinfeld when George suggested naming a child Seven? That was in honor of Mickey Mantle.

12) I remember a little show on TV way, way back called "Blossom," and her best friend's name was Six.

13) Almost forgot about that one. I can't think of anymore names like that.
