update on Mom
Hey folks, welcome to my not-so-decorated Humzoo site. Right now I'm going to use this site as a way to update you all about my Mom while she's in the hospital.
Mom (Sandy to many of you) is doing about the same as yesterday. They are still working to maintain her blood pressure and to bring her fever down. The chest tube she has is draining fluid but they may need to do a surgical procedure to get the infected gunk out from around her lungs.
One thing that happened that isn't very serious but is unfortunate is that Mom bit down on the endotracheal tube (tube attached to the ventilator that goes into her mouth), basically dislodging two lower teeth in the front. The oral surgeon came by this afternoon and removed them manually; she said that the gum should heal quickly. Apparently the roots of these teeth were half the normal length, possibly due to having had braces and/or to periodontitis (gum disease), so I don't think it was really avoidable in this situation.
My cousin Randy, an OB/Gyn, recommended these two sites for researching medical information:
UpToDate http://www.uptodate.com/patients/index.html
WebMD http://www.webmd.com
Once again, we are very grateful to have the support of our many friends and family members. We especially look forward to seeing the relatives that are able to come to Winston-Salem tomorrow -- safe travels!

Thank you, Emily. I'm sending my love down with Bob tomorrow.
So sorry about your Mom! Will lift her and the rest of your family up in prayer!
It will be so good to see you, Merritt and your dad tomorrow...as well as your mom, of course!!! Wayne and I have been thinking about all of you constantly and the first thing Uncle Wayne asked me tonight when he got home from work was whether we had rec'd an update! I had just read your blog/update and was glad to pass that info on to him.
Love, concern and prayers for all of you and see you tomorrow,
AJ
When will they decide if they will do the surgery?
-Sending my love,
Sarah
I am keeping Sandy in my thoughts and prayers constantly and hope that soon she will make that turn to recovery. She has certainly had a tough go of it. Take care of yourselves. Love to all.
